Iran’s supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei has ordered that any threat from its “enemies” must be met with an “immediate and effective” response, with no geographical limits.
The order came a day after Iran said it had struck an “enemy” unmanned surface vessel east of the Strait of Hormuz and that several “violating” oil tankers had caught fire in separate incidents in the waterway.
Meanwhile, a Qatari delegation arrived in Tehran for talks with senior Iranian officials on regional developments.
The visit follows Iranian media reports that Tehran had received a letter from US vice president J.D. Vance, reportedly aimed at restarting peace negotiations.
Israel and the US launched joint attacks on Tehran and other Iranian cities in February. Iran responded with missile strikes on Israel and on US bases and assets in the region, and tightened its grip on the Strait of Hormuz.
Separately, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) warned that continuing disruption to shipping through the strait and along key Red Sea routes is pushing up freight and fuel costs. It said this was putting further pressure on food supply chains, particularly in developing countries.
