Iran has received a letter from US Vice President JD Vance urging a return to negotiations, according to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of the country’s supreme national security council, who said Tehran had yet to respond.

Iranian media reported that the letter arrived several days ago and was sent on the instruction of President Donald Trump as part of an effort to revive talks.

Speaking to Iranian state television, Rezaei said the tone adopted by Washington represented a noticeable change and described it as “a good sign”.

However, he insisted that Tehran’s position remained unchanged, saying Iran expected the US to meet seven conditions before any talks could begin.

The remarks came amid growing tensions between the two countries. According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump was briefed on Thursday by senior US military officials on possible courses of action regarding Iran.

The newspaper also reported that Washington had advised several Gulf states to prepare for the possibility of a short but intensive military campaign against Iran following the US midterm elections.

Escalation

Relations have deteriorated sharply since joint US-Israeli strikes on Tehran in February.

In a further escalation, Iran’s foreign ministry announced on Sunday that it had designated the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) as “terrorist and hostile” organisations.

The move followed a resolution passed by Iran’s supreme national security council.

In a statement, the foreign ministry accused the British government of pursuing anti-Iranian policies and actions that it said violated the principles of the UN charter and international law.
