The shooting that left one person dead and six others injured inside a packed Halloween store in the Bay Area Friday was a “targeted incident” carried out by a lone gunman, police announced.

The Fairfield Police Department said investigators are zeroing in on a single suspect who fled the Solano Town Center before officers arrived and remains at large.

“Based on preliminary information obtained during the investigation, the shooting is believed to have stemmed from a targeted incident involving one suspect inside the Spirit Halloween store,” the department wrote in a statement on social media.

“Detectives continue to actively investigate this case, reviewing video footage and other evidence to identify the individual responsible for this heinous act of violence. Currently, we are not releasing additional details about the incident.”

The announcement comes after the FBI’s Sacramento field office confirmed that it deployed its Evidence Response Team to assist the Fairfield Police Department with processing the sprawling crime scene at the Solano Town Center.

Officers were called to the mall around 8:30 p.m. Friday, about 45 miles northeast of San Francisco.

Inside the Halloween shop, which took over an old Best Buy, police found seven people shot.

One victim died at the scene, while six others were rushed to local hospitals, with at least three in critical condition on Saturday.

“Our department extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim who died from their injuries,” police said. “We also extend our thoughts to the other victims who were injured during this shooting.”

Witnesses said people started running as soon as the shots were fired.

“I think she told that there was like five, six, seven shots when people were running,” one man told KCRA, describing what his wife heard inside the shop.

Another witness said a store worker ran into a nearby restaurant, telling people someone walked in and started shooting.

The Fairfield attack happened just hours after another deadly shooting at a Spirit Halloween near Detroit, Michigan, where a 21-year-old man was killed Friday afternoon after an argument with an acquaintance.

With families heading out for Halloween on Saturday, Fairfield police told neighbors to be careful.

“We recognize the concern and uncertainty this incident has created throughout our community, particularly with the many Halloween events and celebrations planned for today,” police said.

“We encourage everyone to remain vigilant, look out for one another, and report any suspicious activity.”

Police are asking anyone with phone video or tips to call the Fairfield Police Department at 707-428-7600 or email [email protected].
