Rescuers in India spent roughly two hours moving an enormous python off a highway, with the snake’s size and aggressive behavior making the operation particularly challenging.
The animal weighed about 205 pounds (93 kilograms) and measured approximately 13 feet, requiring careful coordination to get it to safety.
Here’s what to know
The highway rescue took place near Naraingarh, Haryana, according to India TV News. The wildlife rescue group involved was Vande Mataram Dal.
The snake was estimated to be about 30 years old. Capturing it was especially difficult because of its exceptional weight and aggression, said Bharat, the Vande Mataram Dal member who led the rescue, per India TV News.
Bharat attributed the difficult rescue’s successful completion to cautious handling, sound judgment, and coordination. Wildlife Department officials assisted the group throughout the operation.
More background
The rescue was among Haryana’s largest wildlife operations. The group described it as unusually large and demanding for its team, per India TV News.
The enormous snake was directly in the path of people and vehicles on the highway, requiring rescuers to remove it from the road rather than leave it in a potentially dangerous setting.
The account does not establish how the python ended up on the highway. While Bharat described the animal as aggressive, no attack on a person was reported.
What’s being done?
The python’s release site was woodland in Panchkula’s Morni area, according to India TV News. Vande Mataram Dal and Wildlife Department officials returned it there after removing it from the highway.
The operation combined the rescue group’s wildlife handling experience with assistance from department officials.
Vande Mataram Dal has carried out more than 1,300 rescues since 2012, Bharat said.

Rescuers elsewhere in India have faced similar challenges when large pythons turn up near people.
• Near Maharashtra airport, rescuers faced a python tug-of-war while handling a 10-foot snake.
• In Rajasthan, a nearly 12-foot python slipped free during rescue in a neighborhood.
• In Dahisar West, rescuers hauled a massive python from beneath a parked car’s hood.
