British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has hinted at formally apologizing for the historical crimes of slavery, but has flatly refused to provide any kind of economic compensation to the affected countries. In an article written in the British newspaper The Guardian, Prime Minister Burnham has expressed deep sorrow and regret over this 400-year-old inhumane trade.
This statement has come at a time when the heads of state of the Commonwealth countries are going to meet in Antigua and Barbuda, where the Caribbean countries are demanding compensation from Britain. Britain has never apologized for the practice of slavery till date. Burnham said that relations with Commonwealth countries are being affected due to hiding from history, so he is ready to consider talks with the affected countries and demand an apology.
Absence of colonialism in Burnham’s ‘apology’ is unforgivable: Tharoor
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said Burnham’s failure to include colonialism in her apology for the trans-Atlantic slave trade is completely unacceptable and inexcusable. It is shameful that Britain never offered even a simple apology for the bloodshed, looting and destruction it caused in India and other countries during the British Empire.
