Eight people were taken to hospitals Saturday after a vehicle drove onto a sidewalk in the Arlington Heights community of Los Angeles, authorities said.
Firefighters and paramedics were dispatched at 12:51 p.m. Saturday to 4040 W. Washington Blvd., a couple blocks north of the Santa Monica (10) Freeway, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported.
“A total of 10 patients were assessed at the scene of the accident, resulting in 8 patients receiving transport to local hospitals,” the LAFD’s Jennifer Middleton said.
The genders, ages and conditions of the patients were not immediately available, she said.
Among the injured was a 3-year-old child, according to multiple broadcast reports.
Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Mike Wells told reporters an elderly man was arrested at the scene and faced reckless driving charges. He said the man had no criminal history and intoxication did not appear to be a factor in the crash. He said the man blamed his brakes for failing.
Wells said none of the injuries appeared life-threatening.
The department said traffic in the area would be delayed and northbound traffic would be shut down on 10th Avenue at 23rd Street.
