Hiba Elrashid, Clinical Oncology Specialist at National Cancer Institute, shared on LinkedIn:
“It has been a great pleasure and privilege to participate as a speaker at London Global Cancer Week 2026, during the AORTIC session, ‘Update on Cancer in Conflict Zones in Africa: Have We Moved the Needle?’
I am grateful for the opportunity to present my work on the management of hematological malignancies in Sudan during the ongoing armed conflict.
My sincere thanks to London Global Cancer Week, AORTIC- Africa, special thanks for Nazik Hammad, Moawia Mohammed Ali Elhassan (this couldn’t have been done without you) and all the organizers for their dedication, time, and tremendous effort in making this important session possible.
On a personal note, this experience meant a lot to me. I remember attending AORTIC scientific webinars years ago, listening to inspiring speakers and admiring their presentations. I used to wonder: Could I ever be one of those speakers?
Today, having the opportunity to stand among them, share my own experience, and contribute to the scientific conversation feels incredibly special.
The session’s central question, ‘Have we moved the needle?‘, also made me reflect on my own journey. While we continue to ask how much progress we have made in cancer care in conflict-affected settings, I realized that, in my own small way, I have moved the needle, too.
From once being an audience member watching those scientific webinars to becoming a speaker in one of these discussions, this is progress I will always be grateful for.
There is still so much work to do, both in improving cancer care in conflict settings and in our individual professional journeys. But every step forward matters.
Grateful for this opportunity, the people I met, and the inspiration to keep moving forward.”
To which, Moawia Mohammed Ali Elhassan, Consultant of Radiation Oncology at KKUMC, added:
“Thank you, Dr. Hiba Elrashid, for shedding light on the severe impact of the ongoing conflict on hemato-oncology services in Sudan. You and the rest of the speakers delivered truly fantastic and informative presentations!
Kudos to the organizing committee for putting together this vital sessions!”
