Valeo’s China design wins show foreign suppliers can still win ADAS business by pairing proven hardware with certified software
Valeo has secured design wins with several automakers in China for a front-view smart camera platform built on QNX OS for Safety, the certified operating system from BlackBerry’s QNX division. Production is due to start before the end of 2026, with the QNX software paired with Valeo’s advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) hardware and software.
Cameras of this kind identify vehicles, pedestrians, lane markings and road signs, so they must combine AI processing with predictable, real-time behaviour. A certified operating system is meant to ease the engineering load as automakers roll the camera out across several vehicle programmes.
The partners, which have worked together for years, presented the platform at the Canada Pavilion of the ninth China International Import Expo in Shanghai. Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, tied the agreement to Ottawa’s trade diversification efforts, noting that QNX software already runs in over 275 million vehicles.
“Every automaker is taking a slightly different approach to ADAS, so flexibility is key,” Song Zhou, President of Valeo China, said. “By combining Valeo’s experience in camera systems with technology from QNX, we’re giving customers a smart camera platform they can shape around the needs of their own vehicle programs. We’re excited about what this can enable as automakers bring more advanced ADAS features to the road, with the shared goal of supporting safer driving environments.”
