The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on Friday issued new guidelines for toll collection. Under this, preparations are now being made to collect toll on national highways having four lanes or more wide without stopping the vehicle. This new system is called Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system.

After the implementation of this system, drivers will not have to stop at toll plazas and pay toll. Vehicles will be able to move without stopping and with the help of new technology, toll will be deducted automatically. This will provide relief from long queues and jams at toll plazas.

Relief from long queues at toll plaza

According to NHAI, the objective of the new guidelines is to make traveling on the highway easier, faster and safer. After the introduction of the new system, there will be no long lines of vehicles at the toll plaza and people will not have to wait to pay toll. This will save people’s time, reduce petrol and diesel consumption and vehicles will be able to run without interruption on the highway.

There will be changes in the design of toll plaza

NHAI has set new rules for making barrier-free toll plazas. It has been told how the toll plaza will be designed, how many lanes there will be and where the structures will be installed over the road to collect toll. Apart from this, rules have also been made for the lighting, sign boards and security arrangements on the road. Its objective is to prepare all toll plazas across the country in similar design, so that the new toll system can be implemented easily.

There will be a need for fewer lanes at toll plazas

In the new system, vehicles will not have to stop to pay toll. In such a situation, fewer lanes will be required as compared to the old toll plaza. According to NHAI, this will save space at the toll plaza and it can be used better. Also, vehicles will be able to move without any hindrance, which will reduce the problem of traffic jams.

Rules will be applicable on new and under construction highways

NHAI said that the new rules will be applicable to all the future national highways as well as those highways which are currently under construction. In the highway projects for which Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared, the design will be made according to the new toll system.

At the same time, in the highway projects whose contracts have already been awarded or whose work has started, necessary changes will be made as per the terms of the contract. However, NHAI has not yet clarified as to when this facility of non-stop toll deduction will start at toll plazas across the country.
