As 10 News continues to break down the midterm resultsRadford University political science professor Dr. Chapman Rackaway joined us Wednesday morning to share his insight and expertise.

Before entering academia, Rackaway worked on political campaigns, bringing first-hand experience to his teaching on campaign strategy, finance and the media.

On Tuesday night, Democrats cemented control of both chambers of Congress in what many are calling a “blue wave.” According to NBC News, the last time the minority party flipped control of both chambers in a single night was in 2006.

“We saw the wave coming, but we didn’t know it was going to be a tsunami,” Rackaway said. “When I was doing my last-minute predictions on Monday, I had said that it looks like a good night for Democrats, but they would probably get 225, maybe 230, in the House, and they should be happy with a 50-50 split in the Senate, ecstatic at 52 or 53. Now, it looks like they are going to have as many as 245 seats in the House, and they’re going to flip the Senate to 55. This exceeds anybody’s expectations.”
