Airtel Africa has long been pitched as a pure play on African data and mobile money, yet the share price told a different story coming into today, down about 21% over three months to £2.59. Q2 2027 earnings provide fresh numbers on that disconnect. Revenue reached about US$1.97b and net income came in at US$211m, with profitability for the last 12 months running at a 10.3% net margin. The stock has barely moved, but the headline story is an earnings base that appears stronger than the recent share price performance suggests.

Airtel Africa Capex Push Starts To Show Through

The bullish story around Airtel Africa hangs on whether heavy FY27 investment can translate into real scale rather than just bigger bills.

“A key requirement for this view is that Airtel Africa converts its heavy FY27 CapEx and new growth projects in 4G/5G, home broadband, data centers and Airtel Money into sustained customer, transaction and revenue gains, while managing diesel and energy costs so that margins are not eroded too far.”

On this test, the latest half looks encouraging. Revenue reached US$3.8b with EBITDA of US$1.92b and Q2 EBITDA margin around 50.4%. Customer numbers moved to 194m, mobile money users passed 60m and transaction value annualised at about US$275b. Front loaded capex of US$657m sat alongside positive free cash flow and net margin of 10.3%, so profitability held up even with higher energy costs.

Airtel Africa Margins Hold, Fuel Risk Not Yet Cleared

The bear worry is that fuel and tower inflation quietly eats Airtel Africa’s earnings conversion even as revenue grows.

“Although Airtel Africa is reporting double digit constant currency revenue growth with EBITDA margins above 50%, management now quantifies that current fuel price levels could remove 2.5% to 3% from EBITDA margin if oil stays elevated. This would materially weaken earnings conversion from the expanding data and Airtel Money revenue base.”

H1 results show roughly 50.4% Q2 EBITDA margin, a 10.3% trailing net margin and positive free cash flow alongside US$657m capex. So the feared erosion is not yet visible. The miss is different. Shares are down about 21% over 90 days, which suggests investors remain unconvinced that this resilience is durable if fuel costs spike again.

Hunt For Mispriced Cash Generators

Airtel Africa shows that a solid earnings base does not always align with a confident share price. The real opportunity could sit in stocks that appear undervalued before sentiment and valuation assumptions converge.

  • Company 1 – 47% below our estimate – uses new entertainment centers and a capital-light rollout model to drive recurring cash flows from booking and pricing software.

  • Company 2 – 43% below our estimate – applies an AI-focused technology stack so price comparison traffic, cashback journeys and partner leads feed a unified, more efficient platform.

  • Company 3 – 32% below our estimate – manages fee-based access to renewable projects and social infrastructure as diverse fundraising channels support demand for long duration real assets.
