Uganda’s military chief announces surprise plans to step down amid growing speculation over father-to-son presidential succession

The announcement, made on Friday, November 6, 2026, comes amid speculation over a possible father-to-son presidential succession, following Muhoozi’s declaration that he intends to contest Uganda’s 2031 election. In a statement posted on X, Muhoozi said he had completed the responsibilities he believed God had assigned him and was preparing to hand over

The announcement, made on Friday, November 6, 2026, comes amid speculation over a possible father-to-son presidential succession, following Muhoozi’s declaration that he intends to contest Uganda’s 2031 election.

In a statement posted on X, Muhoozi said he had completed the responsibilities he believed God had assigned him and was preparing to hand over command of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

“My time as CDF is coming to an end. I have accomplished all the tasks my God gave me. In a few months, I will hand over this office to a qualified officer,” he stated.

He also revealed plans to dedicate himself to Christianity after leaving office.

“I shall dedicate my life to Christ after that,” he added.

Muhoozi did not name a successor or give an exact departure date. However, a subsequent statement suggesting he would remain around for at least another year has left the timing of his exit uncertain.

Muhoozi’s planned departure comes as attention increasingly turns to the political future of Uganda, where his father, President Yoweri Museveni, has ruled since 1986.

Museveni secured another presidential term in January 2026, extending his leadership beyond four decades, while his 52-year-old son has emerged as a potential successor.

In August 2026, Muhoozi declared his intention to contest the 2031 presidential election, intensifying speculation that Uganda could eventually witness a transfer of power from father to son.

Such a transition would mark a significant moment for a country that has never experienced a peaceful presidential handover since independence.

Muhoozi’s political ambitions have also attracted scrutiny because of his position as military chief and leadership of the Patriotic League of Uganda, a movement associated with his presidential aspirations.

However, his planned military exit does not guarantee a path to the presidency, and Museveni has not confirmed whether he will seek another term in 2031.

Since becoming Chief of Defence Forces in March 2024, Muhoozi has overseen Uganda’s military operations amid continued defence cooperation with Russia and Israel.

On October 21 and 22, 2026, Museveni commissioned Russian-backed military facilities and equipment worth US$53 million, including a mechanised repair centre, marine security installations and training infrastructure.

Uganda also maintains close defence ties with Israel. In February 2026, Muhoozi met Israeli ambassador Gideon Behar, reaffirming their longstanding relationship.

“We have been cooperating as friends and allies for many decades and we shall continue to do so in the years to come,” he said.

In March, he publicly offered military assistance to Israel if it faced defeat in its conflict with Iran, underscoring his support for the country.

His planned departure also comes weeks after his son, Ruhamya Kainerugaba, was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the UPDF on October 20, 2026, following training at Britain’s Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

The ceremony, presided over by Museveni, brought three generations of the family into focus, drawing attention to its continued influence within Uganda’s military establishment.

For now, Muhoozi has framed his planned exit around completing his military responsibilities and dedicating his life to Christianity, leaving its implications for his presidential ambitions unclear.
