President Donald Trump said he would have the Department of Justice look into threats of “Impeachment and many other forms of punishment” by Democrats against certain members of his administration, companies and donors to his ballroom project as he grapples with a new reality in Congress.
“The Democrats are going around threatening a lot of people, including the Attorney General of the United States, and others, with Impeachment and many other forms of punishment, even though they admit they have no reason to do so, and there have been no impeachable acts committed, or even thought of, by the victims of this illegal process,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Saturday, adding that it was “extortion at the highest level.”
“The imprisonment should be against these EXTORTIONISTS, and Republicans should get smart, fast! Threatening letters have been sent to many people, all innocent, from Democrat Political Leaders,” Trump continued. “By copy of this statement, I am ordering the Department of Justice to look into this criminal act, immediately!”
CNN has reached out to the White House and the DOJ for comment.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who is expected to chair a key Senate investigative panel when Democrats take control of Congress in January, sent letters to a slew of companies and Trump administration officials on Thursday asking them to cooperate with potential investigations.
Among those who received letters were Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr, and several White House ballroom donors, including Amazon, Apple and Google. Crypto companies World Liberty Financial, Binance and Tether also got letters.
Blumenthal warned that the subcommittee will look into “alternative measures to obtain compliance” if the companies and officials do not provide information that the panel requested by January 4, a day after the new Congress convenes. People and companies who received the letters are not obligated to reply until the new Congress is officially in power.
