Santa Clara Fire officials say when firefighters arrived on scene, they found two cars that had collided, with one of them on fire.
“I heard the crash and watched the car kind of spin around. It was sparking from hitting the curb I guess,” said Jerry Pannone, a witness.
Officials said bystanders found a child approximately two to three years old who was unconscious, and they started CPR until medics arrived on scene. Fire officials say the child was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but later passed away.
Authorities say two adults were also taken to the hospital.
The woman in the car with the child remains hospitalized.
The man in the other car had minor injuries and has been released from the hospital. He was arrested by Santa Clara County deputies on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
