Travel company Tripadvisor just released its Winter Travel Index for both domestic and international travelers.
New York City is the top destination in the U.S., with plenty of holiday attractions for visitors. However, it’s followed by much warmer destinations in other parts of the country, including Las Vegas; Key West, Florida; and Anaheim, California.
For trips abroad, international travelers are also looking for warmer spots. The top international destination is Cancun, Mexico. That’s followed by Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; Bavaro, Dominican Republic; and Palm – Eagle Beach, Aruba.
The results are based on Tripadvisor search traffic between August and September this year for travel between Nov. 1, 2026 and Feb. 28, 2027.
If you’re planning a trip this winter, it can pay to bring along the right credit card to make the most of your travel spending — especially as travel prices continue to rise.
According to Tripadvisor’s study, more winter travelers are prioritizing booking experiences and excursions on their trips. Some rewards credit cards have bonus categories for entertainment which can include tourist attractions like museums, amusement parks, and live events. Others may offer the chance to book events and experiences through the issuer, which can offer rewards or discounts. Check your rewards cards before booking to secure any savings you qualify for.
For international travel, make sure you have a credit card that charges no foreign transaction fees. These fees can add as much as 3% to each purchase you make abroad, which quickly add up on a longer trip.
You may also want to consider opening a new travel credit card before you book a winter getaway. This can be a great time to open a new card and meet the required spend for a sign-up bonus while also earning bonus rewards on your airfare and hotel stay. Then, you’ll have a solid bank of points or miles to use toward your next trip.
