The day of the elections has finally arrived. These are the so-called midterm elections, not presidential elections. One might therefore think that they are not particularly important.
But one would be mistaken.
The reason is that these elections are, unofficially, presidential elections as well. They are a referendum on the President. In fact, the President himself called for it. “Pretend that I am on the ballot,” he declared.
They are also, simultaneously, international elections. Their outcome could determine the future of the World.
They matter not only to a resident of Kentucky, for example, but also to a resident of Myrina, in Greece—and, in other words, to people all over the world.
The American voter casts of course a ballot for himself, for his own future.
At the same time, however, he votes for the entire world, regardless of whether this is fair or right.
That is the reality.
Every American election matters enormously because the extent of the influence the United States exerts on the world is unmatched by that of any other country.
And when one adds to this the unpredictable, erratic, and dangerous, yet dynamic and still popular, Trump, these elections truly matter to the world more than any other elections in living memory.
This sense that these are elections of unprecedented importance because of Trump is palpable everywhere.
They seem even more consequential to the voters in many counties than their own national elections.
And perhaps they are.
