Sugar Price Hike: Before Diwali, the rising prices of sugar have started spoiling the kitchen budget of common people. Sugar is becoming increasingly expensive amid increasing demand for sweets and dishes during festivals. In the last one month alone, the price of sugar in the retail and wholesale markets has increased by more than Rs 4 per kg. At the same time, in the last one year its price has increased by about Rs 12 to Rs 13 per kg. Despite the steps taken by the government to stop the rising prices of sugar, the prices remain high.

Prices increased by more than Rs 4 in a month

According to the data of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the average retail price of sugar has reached Rs 59.50 per kg. At the same time, its average price in the wholesale market is Rs 55.40 per kg. A year ago, sugar was available at Rs 46.50 per kg in the retail market and Rs 43.23 per kg in the wholesale market. That means on annual basis the prices in both the markets have increased by Rs 12 to Rs 13.

Most expensive sugar in Kolkata, price in Delhi also Rs 64

Sugar prices have increased significantly even in big cities of the country…

  • On November 3, the retail sugar price in Kolkata was recorded at Rs 65 per kg. A year ago its price here was Rs 50.
  • Sugar is being sold at Rs 64 per kg in Delhi, whereas at the same time last year its price was Rs 46.
  • In Mumbai also, the price of sugar has increased to Rs 61 per kg. A year ago, sugar was available here at Rs 45 per kg.

Why is sugar continuously becoming expensive?

The main reason for the increase in sugar prices is the production being lower than expected in the 2025-26 season. Apart from this, there is pressure on prices due to increase in demand during festivals, damage to crops and reduced supply in the world market. Hoarding of sugar in the market is also being considered as a reason for this.

The government took these steps

To control rising sugar prices, the government has set a limit on sugar stock. Apart from this, steps have also been taken to import sugar, monitor the market and increase the supply. This time, crushing of sugarcane has also been started earlier, so that the availability of sugar in the domestic market can increase.

Production of 8.45 lakh tonnes of sugar in the new season

According to the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Limited (NFCSF), 8.45 lakh tonnes of sugar has been produced in India in the first month of the new season of 2026-27. The new sugar season runs from October to September. In this season, crushing of sugarcane started from October 8. By October 30, production had started in 152 sugar mills of the country. Due to this, the supply of sugar in the domestic market is expected to increase during festivals.
