The Miami Hurricanes are ranked No. 1 in the CFP

After months of maneuvering in polls that determine little to nothing in college football anymore, the Miami Hurricanes ranked No. 1 in the season’s first College Football Playoff poll.

The 8-0 Hurricanes were ranked No. 1 overall in what can only be described as one of the most inconsistent and bizarre rankings the CFP committee has ever released.

The committee’s lack of self-reflection was on display more than ever on a night in America when a rebuke of the Republican Party was on the menu.

If only those same principles applied to college football.

Welcome to the DAZN Pulse, our recap of the biggest stories in sports from the last 24 hours.

Indiana is eight spots ahead of Ohio State, despite the Buckeyes winning the head-to-head matchup. OSU is the last team out of the 12-team field as of the first rankings.

Alabama is the highest-ranked two-loss team despite many believing Texas had the best resume in the country for two-loss teams. In between them is the shock team of the season, Kentucky.

The overall picture for the CFP will change over the next month, with the unpredictability of the season thus far making nearly no one satisfied with how the rankings shook out.

Tennessee, Wake Forest, UCLA, Missouri and more fan bases have every right to be upset with these rankings. Saturday will have several ranked matchups that will make the path to crowning a national champion a little less murky. Let’s just hope the committee learns from this.

From the baseball diamond to Washington

Mark Teixeira

Former New York Yankees and Texas Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira is headed to Congress, where he will represent Texas’ 21st Congressional District after winning the election on Tuesday.

The 21st district covers suburban San Antonio and Austin, a few hours from where he rose to baseball superstardom in Arlington, and his two-year term in Washington, D.C., begins soon.

Not every sports figure had as good a night. Former sportscaster Michele Tafoya lost her Senate race in Minnesota.

Former NFL placekicker Jay Feely, running for an open House seat in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, trailed Democrat Amish Shah 54.9% to 43.3% early Wednesday, though the race had not been called.

No work stoppage after all?

Major League Baseball has proposed postponing the implementation of a salary cap until the 2028 season, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports.

The league will still put into place other elements of its labor offer for next season, citing the difficulty of teams navigating free agency with a possible work stoppage in the background.

This means Spring Training may actually take place in the spring, as opposed to later in the year.

Whether this means baseball is just kicking the can down the road or actually solves the issues at hand has yet to be determined.

After being off league-wide Tuesday due to Election Day, the NBA has a 14-game slate on Wednesday, one contest shy of every team taking the floor.
