The H2SON project works on improving high-temperature electrolysis technologies for the production of green hydrogen

He H2SON projectled by CENERin collaboration with Lurederraworks to improve existing technologies in high temperature electrolysis to produce green hydrogen. The project is coordinated by ADItechcoordinator of the Navarrese R&D&i System (SINAIDi), and financed by the Government of Navarra through the call for aid to carry out collaborative R&D&i projects between agents of the system.

H2SON aims to address the challenges presented by electrolysis technology today. As it is a recent technology, one of the main challenges is increasing the useful life of the materials from which the cells are made. In addition to addressing industrial scalability and reducing processing costs.

Hydrogen is becoming a promising source for obtaining energy since, with this, it leads to the decarbonization of the system, leaving aside fossil fuels, which can contaminate the cyclic process of this technology. CENER and Lurederra work together with this premise.

For its part, CENER is specialized in solid-state electrolysis technology, which consists of, using a current, separating the water molecule into hydrogen and oxygen. Lurederra focuses on the development of these materials from design, production, focused on the flame pyrolysis process and, in collaboration with CENER, they also work on providing different methods for integration into the final system and characterization.

The greatest challenge that the project faces is the development of materials that maintain high performance for the operating conditions of these technologies to produce green hydrogen. Facing this challenge would mean achieving the objective, in such a way that a technology would be obtained that, when working at high temperatures, would favor conditions such as thermodynamics or electrochemistry.
