Anyone headed to the state cross country championships on Saturday, Oct. 31, should plan on a longer drive than usual.
Major construction, road closures and lane restrictions are affecting the routes to and around Norris Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs. On top of that, Air Force Academy has a home football game at 1 p.m. Saturday, which is expected to add to traffic in the area.
Coaches, athletes, parents and spectators should allow substantially more travel time than usual and leave earlier than they normally would. Schools, athletes and spectators are responsible for building in that extra time. Anyone who doesn’t risks arriving too late and missing their race.
The first race, 3A girls, starts at 9 a.m., and races run every 40 minutes through the 5A boys race at 2:20 p.m. The full schedule is in the state championships guide.

School vehicles must use the designated route
All school vehicles, including large buses, Suburbans and short buses, must follow this route set by the CHSAA state cross country site director:
- I-25 to Tejon Street
- Tejon south to Brookside Street
- Brookside west to 8th Street
- 8th Street north to the Norris Penrose access road
Students and spectators driving themselves
From the south:
- I-25 to Nevada Avenue
- Nevada south to Cheyenne Road
- Cheyenne Road west to Cresta Road
- Cresta north to West Rio Grande Street
- Rio Grande east to Lower Gold Camp Road
From the north:
- I-25 to Uintah Street
- Uintah west to North 21st Street
- North 21st Street south to Lower Gold Camp Road
