U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says Washington is ready to play a constructive role in easing tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban.

Rubio made the remarks on Saturday, October 31, on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Atlanta.

The U.S. secretary of state stressed that Washington understands Pakistan’s concerns about terrorist attacks that, according to Pakistani officials, are organized from Afghan territory.

“The United States opposes terrorism, regardless of where it originates or whom it targets,” Rubio said.

According to Rubio, Pakistan believes the Taliban have not taken sufficient action to prevent these attacks and is therefore taking action against them.

Rubio added that Washington is prepared to help if it can play an effective role in reducing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan have escalated in recent months.

Pakistan has repeatedly accused the Taliban of supporting and funding terrorist groups, particularly the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The Taliban have rejected these allegations, saying they will not allow Afghan territory to be used against other countries.
