REDDING, Calif. — Interviews began Friday for Redding’s new finance director, but city officials said there was only one applicant for the permanent job.
The city has been relying on interim Finance Director Joe Bowers, who also serves as a senior executive with Redding Electric Utility. On today’s first day of interviews, the city began interviewing its lone applicant for the permanent position.
Redding Mayor Mike Littau said the lack of applicants could reflect the city’s current political climate and the fact that Redding does not yet have a permanent city manager.
“That kind of tells a story about the culture of Redding itself. Applicants are always going to watch the city council. They’re going to watch social media. Or if they’re looking to relocate to Redding.. is this the kind of city I really want to come to? What kind of environment is it to work for?” Littau said.
The city plans to interview the one applicant and then decide whether to move forward. If the applicant is not the right fit, the city will reopen the application process.
Littau said the city is taking a similar approach with its police chief search, which is now in its second round of recruitment.
