Put an End to the Crisis in the United States

There are no polls in the Greek-American community to help us determine how Greek Americans will vote in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

Ηowever, that might not be necessary.

My answer to those who ask me how Greek Americans will vote is that we will vote more or less the same as other American citizens. Why should we vote differently?

Don’t we face the same issues as other Americans?

And what are the major issues facing us in these elections?

It is the same issue as in 2016, 2020, and now: Donald Trump.

Everything revolves around Trump: Trump himself, his friends, his enemies, his thirst for revenge, the war he launched in Iran, corruption.

And what are the problems the people face, especially those who believed in him and voted for him so many times—the “humble” voters struggling to make ends meet? Isn’t it his failure to keep his promises?

He said: I will bring inflation under control on the very first day I enter the White House.

He said: I will end the war in Ukraine on the very first day.

He said: No more “endless wars.”

He kept none of these promises.

And, on top of that, there are the endless lies and his haphazard foreign policy.

The wholesale overturning of everything in the heat of the moment.

So what message will voters, Greek Americans and others alike, send in Tuesday’s elections?

It will be a referendum on Trump, just as Trump himself requested.

However we Greek Americans have another very serious issue to weigh before deciding whom to vote for:

Turkey is increasingly and brazenly escalating its aggression against Greece and Cyprus. It is demanding—almost insisting—that they make concessions that only a country defeated in war would make.

Unfortunately, it is also encouraged by Trump’s general attitude: his philosophy that the strong take what they can and the weak pay what they must (“the strong do what their power permits, and the weak yield and accept it,” Thucydides).

Where would such a policy lead the world?

In any event, let us hope this election produces a decisive result in one direction or the other.

That they bring an end to this crisis afflicting American democracy and begin the healing of the wounds that have been inflicted.

A crisis that, if allowed to continue, could lead to even greater turmoil.
