Prince William And Prince George Just Broke A Major Royal Travel Rule While Traveling to Barcelona

Passengers on a British Airways flight to Barcelona were treated
to an unexpected royal sighting when Prince William and his eldest
son, Prince George, appeared among the travellers. Dressed casually
and carrying their own bags, the future kings looked like any other
father and son heading off for a football match.

But their low-key journey raised an intriguing question: had
Prince William and Prince George broken one of the royal family’s
most important travel protocols?

Prince William And Prince George’s Unexpected Commercial
Flight

The Prince of Wales and his 13-year-old son reportedly boarded a
scheduled British Airways flight to Barcelona to watch Aston Villa
face FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League.

Fellow passengers captured the pair inside the aircraft, with
discreet security nearby. There was no private jet or elaborate
royal arrival, just a father and son enjoying a football trip.

For William, a passionate Aston Villa supporter, the journey
offered a rare opportunity to spend quality time with George away
from official engagements.

However, travelling together potentially challenged a
longstanding royal convention designed to protect the line of
succession.

The Royal Travel Rule That Keeps Heirs Apart

One of the British monarchy’s lesser-known traditions advises
direct heirs to the throne against flying on the same aircraft.

The reasoning is straightforward: should an aviation disaster
occur, multiple future monarchs could be lost simultaneously.

Prince William is currently first in line to succeed King
Charles III, followed by Prince George, Princess Charlotte and
Prince Louis.

According to longstanding royal practice, heirs are generally
expected to travel separately once the younger heir reaches
approximately 12 years old.

George passed that milestone in July 2025, making his recent
journey with William particularly noteworthy.

Can Royal Travel Protocol Be Broken?

Importantly, this restriction is a convention rather than a
legal requirement.

The reigning monarch can reportedly authorise exceptions,
allowing heirs to travel together when circumstances justify
it.

Queen Elizabeth II previously permitted family members to share
aircraft, particularly when royal children were younger.

Consequently, William and George’s Barcelona trip does not
necessarily represent a breach of protocol. King Charles may have
approved their journey, although no such authorisation has been
publicly confirmed.

Other Surprising Royal Travel Traditions

The monarchy’s strict approach to travel extends beyond
separating heirs.

Senior royals traditionally pack black clothing when travelling
abroad, ensuring they are appropriately dressed should a family
member die unexpectedly.

The custom is associated with Queen Elizabeth II’s experience in
1952, when she learned of her father King George VI’s death while
visiting Kenya.

Without suitable mourning clothes immediately available, she
reportedly had to wait for an appropriate outfit before appearing
publicly upon returning to Britain.
