PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — New surveillance video captured the moment a police officer was struck by a driver attempting to flee police Friday afternoon in Philadelphia’s Germantown section, according to police.
The incident happened around 5 p.m. in the 5600 block of Germantown Avenue during heavy traffic. Police said the officer is in stable condition.
Video shows a black vehicle approaching stopped traffic while honking its horn. The driver then attempted to force a path through traffic, crashing into several other vehicles.
Moments later, a police cruiser arrived at the scene, and officers exited the vehicle and drew their weapons.
Video then shows the vehicle accelerating toward an officer and striking him. The force of the collision caused the vehicle to briefly come off the ground.
Officers then removed the driver from the vehicle and took him into custody.
A woman working at a daycare near the scene, who asked not to be identified, described what she witnessed after hearing the crashes.
“We saw the cops get out of their cars and begin to draw their guns, and we did a code blue — that means we removed all the children. So we went to the back of the building; after that we didn’t see anything else,” she said.
Police have not released details about what led up to the incident or any charges the suspect could face.
