Less than two weeks after Mass General Brigham said it had begun laying off workers, the head of the health care system has sent employees a cryptic email saying MGB faces urgent financial challenges and needed to make improvements but provided no specifics.

The letter emailed late Monday by Dr. Anne Klibanski, chief executive of the state’s largest health system, said MGB is changing how it operates and uses its workforce. But it provided no details, never mentioned layoffs, and raised more questions than it answered.

“We must improve our performance and make thoughtful decisions about how we use our resources,” Klibanski said in the letter sent late Monday to its roughly 85,000 employees.
