STATESBORO, Ga. – Marshall Football dropped a 49-13 contest at Georgia Southern in front of a Homecoming crowd of 24,023 fans at Allen E. Paulson Stadium on Saturday.
With the loss, Marshall falls to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the Sun Belt Conference standings.
“I’m obviously disappointed with the outcome of the game,” Marshall head coach Tony Gibson said. “I thought defensively, we started out and played pretty well, but offensively, the big pick-6 turned the momentum and we had a 4th-and-1 and don’t get it, there was another momentum swing and we never recovered.”
Jo’Shon Barbie had a 45-yard touchdown run that cut the Herd deficit to 14-7 in the first half. Barbie led the Herd in the contest with 83 yards rushing.
Later, the Herd was driving in for a potential game-tying score in the first half, but were stopped on a 4th-and-1 inside the Georgia Southern 5-yard line to negate the scoring opportunity.
Georgia Southern then got a long touchdown pass for a 21-7 halftime lead and stretched the lead from there.
Khalil Wilkins added a 66-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter for the Herd. As a team, the Herd rushed for 250 yards.
Marshall returns to action at home next week for its annual ’75’ game, hosting App State at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
