Several establishments of the LGBTQ+ community in different states of the country, including some in Orlando, Florida, face economic losses and a digital blackout after the sudden suspension of their Instagram accounts. Although several managed to regain access, their owners report a lack of explanations for this measure.

“It’s worrying because this isn’t just happening to us, and it’s not the first time it’s happened to us,” said Brandon Llewellyn, co-owner, Savoy Orlando.

A situation that raises concern for Brandon Llewellyn, co-owner of Savoy, an LGBTQ+ establishment in Orlando.

On October 20, Instagram suspended the business’s account for an alleged violation of its policies related to human exploitation.

An accusation that Llewellyn rejects and for which he assures that he never received a specific explanation. According to him, Instagram first notified him that he had not violated their rules and even apologized for the error; However, he later informed her that he deactivated the account permanently.

The suspension caused negative effects on its sales, since the platform functions as the main means of communication with its clientele. Although they recovered the account this Thursday, they never received clarification.

That same day, a few miles away, another LGBTQ+ establishment was facing a similar situation.

Instagram suspended Anthem Orlando’s account for allegedly violating its community standards without identifying a specific post.

“They didn’t give us any reason, it was just this statement that said: Their Instagram has been closed because they violated our policies according to a publication. They didn’t point out the post, they didn’t point out anything,” said Emmanuel Quiñones, co-owner, Anthem Nightclub]

Although the establishment recovered its profile six days later, during that period it lost access to an audience of more than 12 thousand followers.

The complaints extend to other cities in the country and even outside the United States.

Establishments in states such as California, Texas and New York reported similar suspensions this year.

“This type of accounts is normally an algorithm issue, it is not a matter where someone is blocking the accounts just because, unfortunately the problem is that when the algorithm makes a decision and it is difficult to appeal because there is no way to communicate with Meta,” explained the technology expert, Juan Guevara.

We contacted Meta, Instagram’s parent company, to find out the reasons behind these suspensions. However, at the close of this report we did not receive a response.
