What did the Finance Minister say on Tata controversy?
Nirmala Sitharaman said in Mumbai on Monday that Tata Group is an important part of the Indian economy. Therefore, it is necessary to resolve the ongoing differences between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts soon. He said that both the sides should sit together and talk and restore normalcy soon.
Why did the controversy increase in the 158 year old Tata Group?
Differences have been going on in the Tata Group for the last few months. This dispute came out openly in the board meeting of Tata Sons on 17 September. On one side was N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, while on the other side was Noel Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts. A major reason for this controversy is the listing of Tata Sons in the stock market. RBI had rejected Tata Sons’ demand for cancellation of registration as a core investment company.
After this, the board decided to list the company in the stock market as per the rules of RBI. Also, N Chandrasekaran was again appointed chairman of Tata Sons. In this meeting, Noel Tata alone voted against this decision. At the same time, Venu Srinivasan, the second nominee director of Tata Trusts, voted with the majority.
The Finance Minister also remembered the contribution of the Parsi community in making Tata Group a global brand. He said that Tata Group’s presence in many sectors is important for the Indian economy.
