Three of seven city distribution trucks tested by Euro NCAP have missed its CitySafe award, with the DAF, Isuzu and Iveco entries falling short on visibility and protection for pedestrians and cyclists. The MAN TGL topped the group with five stars, and none of the seven could be ordered with lane keeping assistance.

The TGL, MAN’s first five-star truck, scored 89% for safe driving and a group-best 71% for crash avoidance. Its system guarding cyclists from turning trucks works without the indicators on, earning full marks at low speed.

That distinction separates the four-star finishers. The Volvo FL and Renault Trucks D, which share a platform, each scored 78% and 62%, yet their cyclist turn systems act only once the driver indicates. The Mercedes-Benz Atego, at 77% and 56%, detects cyclists without indicators but offers no camera monitoring.

The DAF XB took three stars, scoring 36% for crash avoidance with no nearside cyclist protection. Both two-star trucks trailed further: Isuzu’s F-Series, on its first Euro NCAP test, paired the best direct vision with 29%, and Iveco’s Eurocargo managed 20%. All seven scored 80% for post-crash safety.

Matthew Avery, Director of Strategic Development at Euro NCAP, called the missing lane keeping technology an unacceptable gap, given that these 12-tonne trucks move constantly between highways, suburbs and city centres. He said MAN had set the benchmark for a city truck.
