Election Day voters told KOB that crime, affordability, education and the country’s future are the top issues that drove them to the polls.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Election Day voters told KOB that crime, affordability, education and the country’s future drove them to the polls.
“I think this is a very, very important election. I think there’s a lot going on within the state of New Mexico that hopefully we can change,” Nathan Portillo said.
Portillo said he wants change on issues he believes affect New Mexicans every day. That includes crime and affordability.
Cherie Howell, 22, said she is thinking about what New Mexico will look like in the years ahead. She said she wanted to use her right to vote.
“I wanted to practice my right of like being able to vote. And I do care about New Mexico. I mean, this is my hometown where I was born and raised,” Howell said. “I would say the safety and the education is definitely something that has made a big deal for us young kids. And both of those need to definitely be improved.”
Lewis Lamar said this election goes beyond New Mexico for him. He said he is concerned about the direction of the country and the future of his children.
“I have every right to be free, walk around, not scared, not afraid. We’re not going back. We’re going forward and we’re not going back to what we used to,” Lamar said.
Lamar added voters may have different choices on their ballots. However, he believes people share a duty to take part.
“Well, I’ll tell you, I think it’s important we all got and go. This is our right. Can’t complain if you’re not getting out and participating. So it’s important we all get out and vote,” Lamar said.
Polls close at 7 p.m. If you’re in line at that time, county officials said you can still cast a ballot.
