Investing.com — Anthropic has struck a $3.4 billion deal to secure gas-fired generators for its data centres, deepening its push into the energy industry as AI developers seek greater control over electricity supplies amid soaring demand and equipment shortages.
The Financial Times reported, citing a person familiar with the matter, that the AI company secured commitments for 1.7 gigawatts of heavy-duty generators from San Antonio-based OnePWR Solutions in late September. The transaction also includes engineering and construction capabilities needed to install the equipment.
The deal represents the largest known single purchase of power-generation equipment by an AI laboratory, highlighting how technology companies are increasingly bypassing traditional suppliers to secure electricity infrastructure as manufacturing lead times stretch years into the future.
The generator purchase comes as Anthropic seeks greater control over the infrastructure supporting its AI operations. The company disclosed nearly $900 billion in computing commitments through 2045, having relied heavily on partners to secure power, chips, data centres and land.
OnePWR had ordered the generators from Caterpillar about two years ago but needed financing to complete the transaction. Anthropic had initially planned to become a OnePWR customer before opting to take over the existing equipment orders, the report said.
Anthropic did not acquire OnePWR itself, and none of the supplier’s employees transferred to the AI company, according to the Financial Times.
The move follows similar efforts by technology companies to secure power-generation capacity directly. SpaceX’s AI subsidiary xAI bought mobile gas turbines for $2 billion earlier this year, while Google’s parent Alphabet acquired energy developer Intersect in late 2025.
Anthropic is also a major SpaceX customer, with its monthly payments to lease computing capacity expected to reach $3.1 billion by year-end, according to the Financial Times.
Anthropic is preparing for a potential initial public offering as early as November, which could rank among the largest listings in history. However, its ambitious infrastructure spending plans face financing challenges, with Blackstone warning investors that the company might receive a junk credit rating rather than the investment-grade rating previously expected.
