ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — At least eight people, including a 3-year-old child, were injured after a driver lost control of a vehicle and struck multiple people outside a grocery store Saturday in Arlington Heights, authorities said.

Firefighters and paramedics were dispatched at 12:51 p.m. Saturday to 4040 W. Washington Blvd., a couple blocks north of the 10 Freeway, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Los Angeles police responded to the scene and found two damaged vehicles.

“Patients are being assessed by LAFD paramedics, and are reported to be awake and alert,” the department said in a preliminary statement. In an update, officials said 10 patients were assessed.

Details on the extent of the injuries of the eight who were hospitalized was unknown, but authorities said all of the injured are expected to survive.

Investigators said the driver lost control of the vehicle, striking several people and a parked vehicle. Police said the driver remained at the scene and was later arrested on a felony reckless driving charge.

News video from the scene showed firefighters tending to the injured, some of whom were sitting on the ground in front of the Superior Grocers store.

Police said they do not believe the driver was impaired at the time of the crash.

Daniel Mateo, who lives nearby, said he witnessed the aftermath of the crash.

“There was one elderly lady that was being rolled out on the gurney onto the paramedics. It was just crazy seeing that,” Mateo said.

Mateo said the incident was especially unsettling because he and his family frequently visit the area.

“I feel super fortunate considering that me and my family come here all the time. It was an older later that got hit and it just made me thing of my mom,” Mateo said.

Investigators are still working to determine what caused the collision. Sgt. Mike Wells said the driver told officers there may have been a mechanical issue with the vehicle.

“He claims the brakes might have failed on the vehicle as he was driving but that’s unconfirmed at this point,” Wells said.

The cause of the crash has not been determined, and the investigation remains ongoing.
