The Norwegian company Yara announced an investment of approximately $15 million to build a new plant in Orotina.

This plant will be used for the storage, mixing, packaging and distribution of fertilizers and other products for crop nutrition.

The project will have an area of 14,932 square meters and the capacity to store up to 28,000 tons.

The above with the objective of strengthening the supply of the Costa Rican market and expanding the company’s regional operations.

The announcement was made on Thursday the 5th during an activity with representatives of the Government, local authorities, agricultural producers and business partners.

From Costa Rica, Yara also serves the markets of Nicaragua, Panama and the Caribbean, so the new infrastructure will allow it to strengthen its distribution processes.

An investment outside the Greater Metropolitan Area, highlights Procomer

The location of the plant in Orotina responds to the importance of the regions in national agricultural activity.

According to the figures cited in the announcement by the Foreign Trade Promoter of Costa Rica (Procomer), 82% of Costa Rica’s agricultural exports originate outside the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM).

The company seeks to have more modern facilities to optimize the storage and handling of products, as well as the attention to farmers and distributors.

Yara provides plant nutrition solutions and technical advice to producers of pineapple, banana and coffee, three of the country’s main agricultural export products.

“With this investment, Yara reaffirms its long-term commitment to Costa Rica and to the producers who contribute to the development of the agricultural economy,” said Guido Franco, vice president of Central America at Yara Latam.

Yara’s career

The plant will also facilitate the distribution of fertilizers whose manufacturing can generate up to 60% less carbon emissions compared to conventional products, according to Yara.

The company noted that these solutions are part of its offer for farmers who must respond to increasingly demanding environmental requirements in international markets.

Yara has more than 120 years of experience, commercial presence in 140 countries and approximately 16,000 collaborators around the world.

The company did not specify in the statement the expected date to complete the construction of the plant or the number of direct jobs that the project will generate.

Agriculture and food represent 29% of exports

The investment is announced in a context of growth in agricultural and food exports.

Between January and September 2026, Costa Rica’s agricultural exports reached $2,929 million, an increase of $113 million, equivalent to 4%, compared to the same period in 2025.

For its part, the food industry recorded exports of $2,174 million, with an increase of $171 million, Procomer noted.

Together, both sectors represented 29% of the country’s total exports during that period, according to data released with the announcement.
