Please join the Chair on India and Emerging Asia Economics at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) for a fireside chat with Dr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), which will be followed by a reception.

India holds some of the largest troves of economic and social data in the world, with some estimates placing India as accounting for 20 percent of global data generation. As artificial intelligence reshapes how governments, businesses, and researchers turn raw data into insight, few countries stand to gain as much as India: the right data infrastructure could sharpen government decision-making, give startups and academics new tools to advance innovation and scientific research, and strengthen public services at a scale few other democracies can match. Realizing that potential, however, has meant contending with data that is fragmented across ministries, inconsistently classified, and difficult for AI models to use reliably. Under the leadership of Secretary Saurabh Garg, MoSPI has taken on this challenge directly: standardizing hundreds of priority datasets, harmonizing classifications across government, and building the data infrastructure needed for AI systems to effectively leverage India’s statistics in service of better governance, research, and public decision-making.

Secretary Garg will join CSIS to discuss MoSPI’s progress to date, the road ahead, and what a more standardized, AI-ready data ecosystem could mean for India’s own governance and innovation landscape and for how India partners with others, including the United States, on technologies increasingly built on trusted, high-quality data. The conversation will be moderated by Aman Thakker, Fellow, Chair on India and Emerging Asia Economics at CSIS, and followed by an open Q&A with the audience.

Kindly register via the Register Tab to attend in person. Seating is limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note, registration does not guarantee entry. A confirmation email from CSIS is required for attendance.

The fireside chat will take place from 4pm to 5pm. A reception will follow the conversation.

This event is made possible through general support to CSIS
