Two cities in the Lowcountry are being spotlighted as top tourist destinations for the holidays.

Charleston and Bluffton made Southern Living’s list of the eight best travel spots in the South to spend Thanksgiving. The list was curated by two tourism industry experts — one who runs a travel blog and the other who works as a travel advisor.

The two South Carolina cities were named alongside Williamsburg, Va.; Naples, Fla.; Asheville, N.C.; and Blackberry Farm, Tenn.

Charleston is “one of the South’s most beloved destinations,” Southern Living wrote. The Holy City has been named the No. 1 “small city” in the country in Condé Nast Traveler’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards 15 times in the past 16 years.

On Thanksgiving in Charleston, you can kick off your morning with the Turkey Day Run and Gobble Wobble through downtown, followed by a celebration in Marion Square. Even if more people are watching than running, “it’s a wonderful way to start the day,” according to Southern Living.

For a Thanksgiving feast, Southern Living recommends Halls Chophouse or 82 Queen, and you can spend the rest of your day walking around downtown and seeing the historic homeswhich are decorated for the holidays. The magazine also recommends driving through James Island County Park to see the Holiday Festival of Lightsor watching the sunset from Pitt Street Bridge.

About two hours south of Charleston is Bluffton, the second South Carolina city on the Southern Living list. The magazine emphasized the hotel Montage Palmetto Bluffdescribing it as a “Lowcountry Thanksgiving done right” complete with oyster roasts along the river and bike rides to nightly s’mores pits.

Outside of the resort, travelers can always visit the “chic downtown” or even take a day trip to Savannah, which is less than an hour away.
