Adobe provides a comprehensive suite of creative, document, and experience management tools that are essential for modern digital work. Okta specializes in identity management, ensuring that the right people have the correct access to technology resources. These two companies represent different tiers of the cloud ecosystem, from creative application layers to critical security infrastructure.

The case for Adobe Systems

Adobe operates as a major force among tech stocksfocusing on creative tools and digital experience management. The business centers on three primary pillars: Creative Cloud, Document Cloud, and Experience Cloud. These segments serve a diverse audience, including business professionals, consumers, and creative professionals, through an end-to-end platform for content creation and activation. Adobe relies on an extensive partner ecosystem of distributors and systems integrators to reach its global user base of over one billion monthly active users.

In the fiscal year ended Nov. 28, 2025, revenue reached around $23.8 billion, representing a year-over-year increase of approximately 10.5%. This growth highlights the steady demand for its subscription-based services across both individual and enterprise tiers. The company remained highly profitable during this period, reporting net income of about $7.1 billion. This resulted in a net margin of roughly 30%, showing that the company successfully turns a significant portion of its revenue into actual profit.

As of its November 2025 balance sheet, Adobe reported a current ratio of nearly 1.0x. Its current ratio is a liquidity measure that shows whether a company can cover its short-term debts using assets it expects to convert to cash within one year. The debt-to-equity ratio was approximately 0.6x, a metric that compares total debt to shareholder equity to show how much the company relies on borrowing. According to its latest annual report, Adobe generated free cash flow of about $9.9 billion, which is the cash remaining after paying for operations and capital equipment.

The case for Okta

Okta provides identity and access management solutions that serve as a central control plane for human and machine identities. The company serves more than 20,000 customers, ranging from small businesses to large government agencies. Its platform is supported by the Okta Integration Network, which includes over 7,000 integrations with various cloud, mobile, and security vendors. This broad connectivity makes Okta a critical layer for organizations managing complex software environments.

In the fiscal year ended Jan. 31, 2026, revenue reached approximately $2.9 billion, which was an 11.8% increase compared with the prior fiscal year. This growth is driven by the ongoing transition of corporate security to the cloud. For the first time in recent years, the company reported a positive net income of roughly $235 million. This resulted in a net margin of approximately 8.1%, indicating that the business is beginning to achieve profitability as it scales its operations.

As of its January 2026 balance sheet, the current ratio stood at roughly 1.4x, suggesting the company has a comfortable cushion to meet its short-term obligations. The debt-to-equity ratio was approximately 0.1x, showing that the business maintains a very low level of debt relative to its equity. Free cash flow for the period reached close to $863.0 million. Note that stock-based compensation (SBC, for short) represented roughly 61.5% of operating cash flow, which inflates reported cash generation since SBC is a non-cash expense added back in the cash flow statement.

Risk profile comparison

Adobe faces intense competition from global competitors, cloud-based software companies, and new AI-native start-ups that could disrupt its creative dominance. The company also manages potential legal and operational liabilities related to how it deploys artificial intelligence technologies. Furthermore, Adobe deals with ongoing regulatory scrutiny, as seen in a 2026 settlement of approximately $150 million regarding its subscription management practices. Cybersecurity incidents and data breaches also remain constant threats to its reputation and service continuity.

Okta operates in a crowded market where it must compete with large, well-resourced companies like Microsoft Corp. (MSFT -3.58%). Past unauthorized access to its internal systems has highlighted the company’s exposure to cybersecurity threats, which could harm its reputation if they recur. Service interruptions also pose a risk, as they could violate agreements with customers and lead to financial penalties. Additionally, the dual-class stock structure concentrates voting power, and global privacy regulations create ongoing compliance challenges for its data management practices.

Valuation comparison

Adobe currently trades at a significantly lower earnings multiple and sales multiple than its peer, suggesting a more conservative valuation for the software giant.

The Forward P/E ratio compares the stock price to future earnings estimates over the next year. The P/S ratio measures the stock price against sales over the past twelve months. These metrics help you understand if a stock is priced fairly relative to its financial performance.

Which stock would I buy for 2027?

Adobe is seeing some management turmoil. Anil Chakravarthy will become president and CEO of the business on Dec. 1, but his appointment sparked the resignation of another contender for the helm, business group leader David Wadhwani. The company remains without a permanent CFO (there is an interim CFO in the role today). Such leadership issues come at a nervous time, when the market tries to pinpoint which software-as-a-service companies may be disrupted by generative AI.

That said, Adobe has a suite of products that are standards in the industry, from its PDF format to Photoshop for images and complex video editing software used by businesses as large as the Imagineering division of The Walt Disney Co. (DIS -1.45%) that designs theme park elements.

Sales growth should come in at about 12% in the current fiscal year, to $26.6 billion, with net income edging about $150 million higher to $7.28 billion. That’s decent growth.

Okta, meanwhile, should enjoy revenue growth of about 10% this fiscal year to $3.2 billion, with a roughly 50% improvement in net income to more than $350 million, according to consensus analyst estimates.

Longer-term, enterprise agentic adoption is making companies think more about the importance of identity security as a critical piece of their corporate defenses. Analysts also see AI-driven opportunities from Okta’s agentic products, as well as strong traction with newer products such as Okta Identity Governance and Okta Privileged Access. Deal sizes for AI-specific deals are larger than the company’s average, and management says such deals are increasingly the topics of conversation with new and existing clients. That bodes well for the future.

So which stock to buy? Okta’s sales growth doesn’t seem to support its high valuation, based on its P/E and P/S ratios. That doesn’t mean the AI-driven business won’t come to fruition, but it feels too early in the results to buy it based on that. Adobe is a far more reasonably priced stock with moderate growth.
