Winnipeg Jets crush Canucks 6-2 for second straight victory – Winnipeg

The Winnipeg Jets didn’t need a miracle on this night to pick up two points.

Fresh off their historic comeback win Tuesday in Montreal, the Jets made easy work of the lowly Vancouver Canucks 6-2 at Canada Life Centre Thursday night and improved their overall record to 6-8-3.

The Canucks fall to 3-14-1, the worst mark in the NHL.

The Jets goal scoring woes are suddenly a distant memory as they struck for three goals in the first period en route to their first back-to-back wins in nearly a month. Including last game, the Jets scored seven goals in the span of just 10:12.

“The big thing for me was the first period,” said Jets head coach Scott Arniel. “Very easy to be caught up in what happened in Montreal and come out flat and allow Vancouver to get to play their game. And I didn’t think we did that. I thought all the lines, the ‘D’, everybody was ready to go and we got after them.

“We got out in front real quick. So, now all of a sudden, you got the opposition on their heels and that’s what we were hoping for. It’s about building and stringing things together, but you got to play the right way to do it, and I thought that we’ve done that in a couple games in a row here.”

It was the first time the Jets have had a two-goal lead since October 13.

The Jets had six different goal scorers in the victory. Dawson Mercer recorded his first goal as a Jet and also added an assist while rookie Viggo Björck finally found the scoresheet as a third period assist on a Mark Scheifele goal was his first career NHL point.

“It was fun,” Björck said. “I felt like it should have come like a couple games earlier but yeah, it eventually came in.”

Brayden Yager was in the lineup after getting recalled from the Manitoba Moose earlier in the day. He skated on their second forward line with over 14 minutes of ice time and hit the goal post, just missing his first career NHL goal.

“I thought that he did a good job,” Arniel said. “He went down to the Moose after coming up, both training camp and then coming up after the Dallas game. He was still their best player down there, playing hard and doing all the right things. You like to see the growth in a player and a guy take advantage of opportunities that are in front of him. I thought that line did a real good job with the puck possession.”

Scheifele’s goal ended an eight-game goal scoring drought, while Alex Iafallo, Neal Pionk, Cole Koepke, and Mario Ferraro scored their other goals.

The Jets have now won seven straight home meetings against the Canucks.

Elias Salomonsson missed the game with an illness, while Haydn Fleury left the game early in the third period with what appeared to be a hand injury.

“He got hit with a shot,” said Arniel. “That’ll be kinda wait and see on that one.”

The Jets needed less than four minutes to strike in this one as Iafallo deflected in a Fleury shot from the point on a powerplay.

And then 14 seconds later, Koepke fired his second of the season past Canucks goalie Leevi Meriläinen.

The Canucks would get on the board a few minutes later on a Liam Ohgren goal but later in the period, Mercer buried a pass from Cole Perfetti for his first goal of the season and first as a Jet since the trade from New Jersey almost two weeks ago.

The Jets kept pouring it on in the second period as Pionk scored on a rebound off a Kyle Connor backhand shot and Connor played setup man again as another rebound off his shot came to Scheifele, who scored his third of the season by poking it in with one hand on his stick.

Björck’s first assist finally snapped his 16-game pointless drought to begin his career.

Ferraro would finish off the scoring for the Jets in the third period as he converted a pass from Scheifele for his second of the season.

Isak Rosen returned to the lineup after being a healthy scratch Tuesday with Nino Niederreiter sitting out.

Next up for the Jets is a matchup with the Tampa Bay Lightning at Canada Life Centre on Sunday with puck drop just after 6 p.m.
