Here are key takeaways:
- Buc-ee’s took the top spot, with the magazine citing clean bathrooms, merchandise and fresh food stations as reasons for its “Southern obsession” status. Kentucky has two locations: Richmond and Smiths Grove.
- Cracker Barrel was runner-up, and Waffle House landed at No. 3. Waffle House operates 50 locations across Kentucky, and FEMA uses an informal “Waffle House Index” to gauge storm recovery based on whether stores stay open.
- Love’s Travel Stop ranked No. 4 for its snack selection and charitable giving, with 12 Kentucky locations. QuikTrip, founded in 1958, came in at No. 5 with three Kentucky stops in Elizabethtown, Louisville and Paducah.
- Circle K ranked No. 7 and Flying J came in at No. 9. Flying J emerged from bankruptcy after a 2010 merger with Pilot, according to FleetOwner.
- A sign on the New Jersey Turnpike directs drivers to the nearest Buc-ee’s, which is the Richmond, Kentucky, location more than 500 miles away.
