Moreover, the net interest margin (NIMs) may remain under pressure amid divergent monetary policies and uneven loan repricing. In markets experiencing lower rates, declining asset yields and slower funding-cost adjustments could squeeze margins. Meanwhile, persistently elevated rates elsewhere may dampen lending activity and heighten credit risks. Although selective rate hikes and improving loan demand could offer some relief, broad-based margin expansion appears unlikely. Overall, funding pressures and uncertain credit growth could weigh on foreign banks’ near-term profitability.
Uneven Global Economic Growth to Weigh on Banks’ Prospects: The uneven pace of global economic growth is likely to remain a headwind for foreign banks’ operating performance and profitability. While the United States and select Asian markets have shown relative resilience, sluggish growth in parts of Europe, structural weaknesses in China and financial vulnerabilities in emerging economies continue to cloud the industry’s outlook. Heightened geopolitical tensions, trade-policy uncertainty, elevated debt levels and subdued business confidence could further dampen borrowing demand, restricting loan growth and revenue expansion.
Prolonged economic weakness could strain borrowers’ repayment capacity, particularly in sectors exposed to trade disruptions, high financing costs and weak consumer demand. This may increase credit costs and provisioning requirements, weighing on banks’ earnings.
Restructuring Efforts to Drive Efficiency: Global lenders continue to streamline operations by exiting non-core markets, reducing low-return businesses and reallocating capital toward higher-growth, fee-generating segments such as wealth management, transaction banking and digital platforms. These efforts are strengthening the revenue mix and improving capital efficiency while deepening client relationships. At the same time, workforce optimization, branch rationalization and technology-driven automation are supporting tighter cost control and lower cost-to-income ratios. Continued restructuring should therefore provide a lift to profitability by aligning capital, costs and resources with higher-return growth opportunities.
Zacks Industry Rank Indicates Dismal Prospects
The Zacks Foreign Banks Industry is an 83-stock group within the broader Zacks Finance Sector. The industry currently carries a Zacks Industry Rank #157, which places it at the bottom 36% of more than 250 Zacks industries.
The group’s Zacks Industry Rank, which is basically the average of the Zacks Rank of all the member stocks, indicates underperformance in the near term. Our research shows that the top 50% of the Zacks-ranked industries outperform the bottom 50% by a factor of more than 2 to 1.
The industry’s positioning in the bottom 50% of the Zacks-ranked industries is because of a relatively weak earnings outlook for the constituent companies in aggregate. The aggregate earnings estimate revisions show that analysts are not very optimistic regarding this group’s growth potential. Since the end of August 2026, the industry’s most recent earnings estimates for the year have been unchanged.
Despite the near-term challenges, we present a few stocks from the industry that you may want to consider for long-term gains. But before that, let us check out the industry’s recent stock market performance and valuation picture.
Industry vs. S&P 500 & Sector
The Zacks Foreign Banks Industry has outperformed the S&P 500 and its sector in the past two years. Stocks in the industry have collectively surged 66.2%. The S&P 500 composite has rallied 33.7% and the Zacks Finance Sector has appreciated 24.3%.
Industry’s Valuation
One may get a good sense of the industry’s relative valuation by looking at its price-to-tangible book ratio (P/TBV), which is commonly used for valuing foreign banks because of large variations in their earnings from one quarter to the next.
The industry currently has a trailing 12-month P/TBV of 2.98X. This compares with the highest level of 3.40X, the lowest level of 1.43X and the median of 1.86X over the past five years. The industry is trading at a significant discount compared with the market at large, as the trailing 12-month P/TBV for the S&P 500 composite is 10.59X.
As finance stocks typically have a lower P/TBV ratio, comparing foreign banks with the S&P 500 may not make sense to many investors. However, a comparison of the group’s P/TBV ratio with that of its broader sector ensures that it is trading at a decent discount. The Zacks Finance Sector’s trailing 12-month P/TBV of 6.00X and the median level of 4.93X for the same period are above the Zacks Foreign Banks Industry’s ratios.
3 Foreign Bank Stocks to Invest In
ICICI Bank: Headquartered in Mumbai, this Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) company is one of India’s largest private-sector banks, offering diversified banking and financial services. As of Sept. 30, 2026, the bank had total assets of INR 27.25 trillion, supported by an extensive network of 7,656 branches and 12,143 ATMs/cash recycling machines.
ICICI Bank continues to strengthen its digital banking capabilities through iMobile Pay, its business banking platforms and technology-driven customer solutions. These initiatives are enhancing customer engagement, streamlining loan processing and creating cross-selling opportunities across retail and corporate banking segments.
Technology investments are supporting fee-based revenues. Platforms such as DigiEase and iLens are simplifying customer onboarding and lending processes. Non-interest income increased 14.2% year over year in the first half of fiscal 2027, extending the growth trend witnessed during fiscal 2022-2026. Continued digital adoption and expanding customer relationships are expected to support fee income growth.
ICICI Bank’s strong domestic franchise remains a key advantage, with domestic loans accounting for 92.2% of its total loan book as of September 2026. Following steady retail and rural lending growth in recent fiscal years, these loans increased 14.8% year over year in the first half of fiscal 2027. Its expanding retail deposit base and focus on stable funding should support loan growth and help mitigate funding-cost pressures amid an uncertain interest-rate environment.
Over the past six months, ICICI Bank shares have gained 15.8% on the NYSE. Earnings estimates for the current fiscal year have been revised 6.1% higher in the past 30 days.
Canadian Imperial: Headquartered in Toronto, Canada, CIBC is one of the country’s leading diversified financial institutions. The bank provides personal and business banking, commercial banking, wealth management and capital markets services across Canada, the United States and international markets. As of July 31, 2026, CIBC had total assets of C$1.18 trillion, net loans and acceptances of C$611.4 billion, and deposits of C$852.2 billion.
CIBC’s diversified operations and expanding lending franchise continue to support revenue growth. In the first nine months of fiscal 2026, total revenues increased 14.9% year over year to C$24.77 billion, while NII rose 13.1% to C$13.16 billion. Non-interest income climbed 17.1% to C$11.61 billion, benefiting from stronger trading activities, wealth management fees and capital markets performance.
The positive momentum continued in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, with revenues increasing 15% year over year to C$8.37 billion. Reported net income rose 15% to C$2.41 billion, while adjusted net income jumped 26% to C$2.65 billion. The net interest margin improved to 1.63% from 1.58% a year earlier, reflecting stronger loan and deposit margins. Continued investments in technology and digital banking capabilities should further support operating efficiency and customer engagement.
CIBC’s expanding balance sheet and solid capitalization provide financial flexibility. As of July 2026, deposits increased 5.5% from October 2025, while net loans and acceptances grew 3.7%. The bank maintained a Common Equity Tier 1 capital ratio of 13.4%, reflecting a sound capital position. Although elevated credit costs, economic uncertainty and higher technology-related expenses remain concerning, diversified revenues, steady lending growth and a strong funding base should support its long-term profitability.
CM shares have gained 5.8% on the NYSE in the past six months. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the company’s current fiscal-year earnings has been unchanged in the past 30 days. The company carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
KB Financial: Headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, KB Financial is one of the country’s largest financial holding companies by consolidated assets. Established in 2008, the group operates a diversified financial-services business through KB Kookmin Bank and subsidiaries spanning securities, credit cards, insurance, asset management, consumer finance and other financial services.
KB Financial’s diversified business model continues to support earnings growth beyond traditional lending operations. In 2025, group NII increased 1.9% year over year to 13.07 trillion Korean won, while net fee and commission income rose 6.4% to 4.10 trillion Korean won, reflecting improving contributions from securities and other fee-generating businesses.
The momentum continued in the first nine months of 2026, with net profit attributable to shareholders rising 13.1% year over year to 5.79 trillion Korean won. Group NII increased 2.9% to 9.99 trillion Korean won, while net non-interest income rose 27.3% to 4.76 trillion Korean won. Net fee and commission income jumped 38.5% to 4.09 trillion Korean won, supported by robust securities-related fees and investment product sales.
Non-banking businesses contributed approximately 40% to cumulative net profit, highlighting KB Financial’s diversified earnings base. However, third-quarter net profit declined 4.3% sequentially to 1.91 trillion Korean won amid weaker fee income. Despite near-term margin and market-related pressures, its expanding non-interest income streams, disciplined cost management and balanced business portfolio are expected to support profitability.
Currently, KB Financial sports a Zacks Rank of 1. Its shares have gained 1.8% on the NYSE in the past six months. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the company’s 2026 earnings has been revised 8.2% higher in the past 30 days. You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank stocks here.
