OpenAI CTO Vijay Raji said that the company is considering bringing products with Hindi voice and Android features for India.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) company OpenAI is exploring the possibility of bringing a different version of its products for India. The company’s focus is on such features that can make the use of ChatGPT easier for Indian users. These include conversation in Hindi and other Indian languages, better voice features and reliable work even on weak internet connections.

Vijay Raji, chief technology officer (CTO) of applications at OpenAI, told Business Standard that people in India use AI differently from the US. A large number of people here use Android phones and prefer to ask questions by speaking rather than writing. Therefore, the company is working on improving its products keeping in mind the needs of Indian users.

How fast is the use of ChatGPT increasing in India?

According to Raji, the number of ChatGPT users in India has doubled in the last one year. Apart from common people, its use is also increasing rapidly in companies and educational institutions.

He told that more than 1.2 billion people around the world use OpenAI products every week. OpenAI also wants to increase its investment in India. The company has offices in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi. Here its teams are helping companies adopt AI technology.

How easy will it be to converse in Hindi?

OpenAI is paying special attention to understanding the way Indian users speak and ask questions. Many people in India use both Hindi and English in the same conversation. The company wants ChatGPT to be able to understand such conversations better.

Raji said that the company is improving the pronunciation in its new voice model GPT-Live-1.1. Along with this, 13 new voices are also being added, which include Hindi sounds like Neer and Lahar.

The company is introducing 13 new voices in seven different languages, which have been tried to be closer to the local dialect. These also include the voice named ‘Babi’ inspired by the voices of grandmothers.

Karan MV, associated with Developer Experience at OpenAI, said that after this update, users will be able to have two-way conversations in Hindi in a natural way in the ChatGPT app. That means ChatGPT will not only show your words in writing, but will also understand and respond to it.

When will the facility be available in other Indian languages?

According to Raji, the company wants to gradually expand the voice feature to other major languages of India as well. We will start with the languages which are used the most.

However, how soon this facility will be available will depend on the availability of data required for training. For this, the company is working with companies from other countries including India, which provide data with legal permission.

What is the plan to provide cheap ChatGPT?

OpenAI wants to make AI services accessible to more people in India. The company first launched its affordable ChatGPIT Go plan in India. After this it was introduced in other countries also.

Raji said that the company’s aim is to make AI more accessible and affordable. He said that revenue from advertisements can help in continuing the free services and making them available to more people.

How are Indian companies using AI?

India is among the largest developer markets for OpenAI. Many companies here are using OpenAI technology to create customer service and voice-powered AI assistants.

Raji gave the example of JioHotstar. The company uses voice-based AI to answer questions related to a particular over during a cricket match.

Apart from this, the use of OpenAI’s coding tool Codex is also increasing in Indian startups and big companies. This tool helps in creating software and making other tasks easier.

According to Raji, codec usage within OpenAI has increased to nearly 100 percent since February. Now it is being used not only by software developers, but also by teams in finance and legal departments. The use of the token within the company has increased 17 times in the last 12 months.

Will AI affect jobs?

Regarding the impact of AI on entry-level jobs, Raji said that new technology can change the way work is done and the skills required.

He compared it to the technological changes in the banking sector. According to him, AI can help people do more complex and better work. This can also create new types of employment.

However, he clarified that OpenAI has not yet conducted a separate study of the impact of AI on India’s IT services companies. Raji said that with the help of AI, even small teams can create big products with less resources.

What was said about data security?

On the security of users’ data, Raji said that OpenAI provides data related security facilities to companies. There is also an option to not protect data in its enterprise API services. Apart from this, the company has announced Private Cloud in the Daveday program, the purpose of which is to keep the processing done on AI models private.

Raji said that as AI models become more powerful, the company will increase investment in their security and cybersecurity.

Raji has come to India to participate in the OpenAI Day Exchange program organized in Bengaluru. During this time, the company is considering the utility of about 30 of its new products and features in the Indian market. Raji is also meeting founders of Indian AI startups to better understand their needs and investment prospects.
