The defense operation took place on October 23, 2026, in the area of Bulo Bashiir, located seven kilometers northeast of Janale.

The targeted militant group maintains formal ties to Al Qaeda, the extremist organization responsible for the September 11 terrorist attacks against the United States.

Military commanders confirmed that the joint aerial bombardment aimed to weaken the strategic capabilities and offensive infrastructure of the insurgent movement.

According to an official press release from U.S. Africa Command Public Affairs, “AFRICOM, alongside the Federal Government of Somalia and Somali Armed Forces, continues to take action to degrade al-Shabaab’s ability to threaten U.S. forces and our citizens abroad“.

The coordinated action reflects a sustained security partnership between Washington and Somali national defense units to protect regional stability and prevent further insurgent expansion.

Al Shabaab has built an extensive extremist enterprise across the Horn of Africa, commanding between 7,000 and 12,000 armed combatants and gathering $50 million to $100 million each year through illegal taxation.

U.S. Africa Command previously designated the organization as “the largest, wealthiest, and most lethal Al Qaeda affiliate in the world today”.

The group established a formal partnership in 2012 with Al Qaeda, the network behind the 9/11 attacks in the U.S.

As reported by Congress.gov, “The group has not claimed any attacks in the United States. It has, however, encouraged lone-wolf attacks in its propaganda, and in 2015, it produced a video identifying shopping malls in Europe and the United States as potential targets.

In 2019 a suspect “was arrested in the Philippines and later extradited to the United States on charges of conspiring to hijack an aircraft on behalf of Al Shabaab to conduct a 9/11-style attack in the United States.“

By executing focused airstrikes and offering tactical support to Somali forces, foreign partners continue efforts to dismantle the group’s operational network.
