The Defense Ministry has signed a deal worth more than Rs 53,880 crore to buy 8 next-generation corvettes for the Indian Navy. These warships will be built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL). These contracts were signed in the presence of Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi.
Under the agreement, GRSE will build five corvettes and Goa Shipyard will build three corvettes. It is being told that these projects will be completed in the next few years and will create thousands of employment opportunities.
Navy will design its own warship
According to the Defense Ministry, this is the first such project in which the Indian Navy itself will design the warships and defense public sector undertakings selected through a competitive process will build them.
Modern missiles, weapons and sensor systems will be installed in these next-generation corvettes. With their help they will be able to operate in air, surface and underwater areas.
Maritime security and anti-submarine capability will be strengthened
The induction of these warships into the Navy will increase the security and surveillance capability of maritime trade routes. These will also be used in operations against enemy ships and submarines on the surface, coastal defense and military operations near the coast.
According to the ministry, these corvettes will also strengthen the maritime presence and surveillance capability of the Indian Navy.
Millions of employment opportunities in 10 years
This project is expected to boost India’s domestic shipbuilding industry. This will increase cooperation between defense public sector companies, private shipyards, Indian industrial partners and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
According to the ministry’s estimate, in the next 10 years, about 72 lakh person days of employment will be generated in shipbuilding units as well as about 460 lakh person days in supporting industries and MSMEs.
