Qualcomm (QCOM): Automotive Growth Meets Pressure on Handset Earnings

QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) sells more technology into vehicles while its larger smartphone business weakens. That makes automotive diversification important, but it raises a practical question: can the new growth get big enough to protect overall profits?

At roughly 20 times forward earnings, investors pay for progress beyond handsets before automotive revenue can fully replace that exposure. Compare Qualcomm’s vehicle-chip opportunity with the 10 Best Autonomous Vehicle Stocks to Buy Now.

More Computing in Each Vehicle Creates an Opportunity

Modern vehicles need chips for connectivity, digital displays, safety functions, and increasingly capable driver assistance. Qualcomm can benefit from that growing computing content without running a robotaxi fleet.

Its automotive strategy combines hardware and software across vehicle functions. Snapdragon Ride Pilot, built with BMW, shows the opportunity in advanced driver assistance.

These systems still differ from unrestricted driverless operation. The investment case rests on selling useful technology into production vehicles, not on every design becoming a fully autonomous car.

Automotive Growth Is Real, but Handsets Still Dominate

QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM)’s July 29 earnings release reported fiscal third-quarter automotive chip revenue of $1.59 billion, up 61% year over year.

Qualcomm sells technology rather than operating a fleet. Our autonomous driving stocks list compares that supplier model with other approaches.

That is meaningful growth. But handset chip revenue fell 20% to $5.09 billion, and total QCT chip revenue fell 5% to $8.50 billion.

The comparison explains the central tension. Automotive grows fast, but a decline in the larger handset business can still outweigh its gains. Fast growth in a smaller business does not automatically lift the whole company.

Qualcomm reported total quarterly revenue of $9.9 billion and adjusted EPS of $2.21. Investors should judge the diversification story alongside the performance of the established earnings base.

Pricing Must Catch Up With Higher Costs

Management also pointed to rising semiconductor input costs across manufacturing, packaging, memory, and other materials. It expects pricing actions to help margins as those changes take effect.

That adds another condition for the recovery. Selling more chips matters less if higher production costs eat the extra revenue.

QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM)’s discussion of automotive scale describes relationships with manufacturers worldwide. Those relationships widen its opportunities, but they do not remove cost pressure or guarantee when customers will start production.

Automotive growth does not remove chip-industry cost pressures. Compare other suppliers in our semiconductor stocks with upside potential.

Qualcomm generated $8.41 billion in operating cash flow during the first nine fiscal months, against $10.02 billion a year earlier. That is still a large source of funding, but it also shows why automotive growth alone cannot replace better company-wide cash generation.

The Valuation Now Gives Diversification More Credit

Qualcomm trades at 22.66 times trailing earnings and 19.65 times forward earnings. Investors pay about $20 for each $1 of annual earnings analysts expect.

The lower forward multiple reflects expectations for a stronger earnings base. More automotive revenue and pricing that offsets higher input costs could both contribute. The main uncertainty is whether those gains can outpace continued handset weakness.

The forward P/E sits above the 13.26 it showed on June 30, 2025, and the 11.68 on March 31, 2026. Qualcomm gets more credit per dollar of forecast earnings, so it has not become cheaper against those comparisons.

Its growing automotive opportunity gives a reason to rethink the earlier discount, but the shrinking QCT revenue base makes the higher valuation hard to justify right away.

Qualcomm needs manufacturers to turn designs into production. Our self-driving car stocks list examines other companies developing that market.

The technology-sector median is 21.01 times forward adjusted earnings, and Qualcomm’s multiple sits near that broad benchmark. A modest apparent discount does not settle the question when the shift between its businesses remains unfinished.

Market Sentiment

At the end of Q2 2026, 95 hedge funds held QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM), up from 71 in Q1. Their combined stakes totaled $4.04 billion, against $2.07 billion.

Has Automotive Earned the Higher Valuation?

Qualcomm’s automotive progress supports holding the shares, but the higher forward multiple makes a new purchase less compelling while handset revenue shrinks. A stronger buying case needs automotive growth and better pricing to restore broader profit and cash flow growth. Evidence of that shift would justify more confidence. If diversification keeps growing without improving the company’s overall results, investors could pay more for a transition that takes longer than expected.
