MOSCOW and KYIV — Russian President Vladimir Putin says he has freed an American, Stephen Hubbard, 74, from a Russian prison following a request from President Trump.

The announcement came as talks got underway between Putin and White House envoy Steve Witkoff in Russia’s former imperial capital of Saint Petersburg focused on the latest U.S. efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

Hubbard, a former school teacher native to Michigan, was detained by Russian forces in eastern Ukraine in 2022 and later sentenced — after a closed trial in 2024 — to nearly seven years in prison, for allegedly serving as a mercenary in the Ukrainian army.

The U.S. formally designated him wrongfully detained under the Biden administration.

And yet his case was front and center as the Kremlin leader hosted Witkoff for a meeting at Saint Petersburg’s ornate Constantine Palace intended to focus on a new U.S. peace plan for Ukraine.

In introductory remarks, Witkoff thanked Putin for arranging Hubbard’s release — to which Putin confirmed the American was already at St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo airport waiting to depart Russia.

“You talk so much about my president, President Trump, being a humanitarian,” said Witkoff. “You are a humanitarian also, sir.”

Russian state media later issued footage of a smiling Hubbard shaking hands with Witkoff as the Kremlin’s White House envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, looked on.

President Trump – who had signalled a deal was in the works in comments to journalists earlier in the week – celebrated the news.

“Welcome home Stephen, it’s great to have you back,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding the U.S. hadn’t given “anything in return.”

“There was no “swap” necessary for this release. This major return should have taken place long ago through the Biden Administration, which got nowhere in its negotiations with the Kremlin,” Trump added.

In a statement, Hubbard’s son, Orthodox priest Joseph Coleman, also thanked President Trump — and President Putin — for securing his father’s release.
