The 49ers released defensive lineman Ogbo Okoronkwo on Friday, the team announced.
It clears a roster spot for wide receiver Christian Kirk’s return to the roster from injured reserve. Kirk has spent the season on IR with a calf injury.
The 49ers could re-sign Okoronkwo to the practice squad on Saturday, allowing him to play in Sunday’s game against the Falcons.
As a vested veteran, Okoronkwo is not subject to waivers.
Okoronkwo, 31, has appeared in all six games with one start. He has two tackles and a sack.
In his career, he has 18 sacks and 134 tackles.
