The Associated Press first tabulated vote counts in U.S. elections in 1848 and today gathers election results from local election officials in thousands of races nationwide. Results are reported as soon as they are available. AP’s Decision Team declares winners when certain the trailing candidates no longer have a path to victory. Vote margin shift at the reporting unit level reflects two-party vote share.
